How long does a patio take to install?
Installation timescales vary with the size of the area, the material, and the ground preparation needed. Porcelain and natural stone on a full mortar bed take a little longer than block paving because of the setting time. We give you a realistic programme when we confirm the start date, so you know what to expect.
Do I need planning permission for a patio?
In most cases, no. Permitted development rights cover the replacement or addition of hard surfaces in domestic gardens. Exceptions include conservation areas, listed buildings, and some new-build estates with condition restrictions. If your property has any of those restrictions, check with the local planning authority before booking. We will flag anything we spot during the site visit.
Can a patio be laid right up to the house wall?
Yes, but the surface level matters. The finished patio must sit at least 150mm below the damp-proof course of the house to avoid bridging it. We factor that into the design during the site visit: it is one of the reasons we do not quote without seeing the ground.
Which is more durable, natural stone or porcelain?
Porcelain is denser and less porous, so it resists frost, staining, and algae better than most natural stone without sealing. Natural stone (granite in particular) is extremely hard-wearing but needs sealing on installation and periodic maintenance. For a family garden with heavy use, porcelain or granite is the low-maintenance choice. For a more traditional finish that improves with age, sandstone or limestone suits better.
How do you handle drainage when laying a patio near the house?
All new hard surfaces that drain towards the house need to be designed with surface water removal in mind. We install channel drains, linear drains, or permeable jointing depending on the drainage requirements of your site. Under UK building regulations, surface water cannot discharge within 5 metres of a foundation soakaway, so drainage is planned in at the design stage.
Can block paving be used for both a patio and a driveway to get a matching finish?
Yes, and it is one of the most practical reasons to choose block paving. The same product and colour works across both areas, and block paving on a driveway is engineered to carry vehicle loads, so the surface that runs from your driveway into your garden can be continuous and consistent.
